What do I do if I have lost my Will?

August 5th, 2011

If you believe that you have lost your Will, the first step is to check with any companies that may have it if it is in their possession. For example, if you wrote your Will with a Solicitor or stored it with the bank you should check with them.

After making these enquires, if the Will cannot be located, it is imperative that you make a new Will as soon as possible. The new Will will render any previous ones invalid.

Once a new Will has been made, it is advisable to store it in a safe place (contact The Probate Bureau for more information on storage) and keep a copy at home with details of where the original is held. You may also wish to consider giving a copy to the executor for their reference. This ensures that when the time comes to deal with your estate, your relatives know where to go to obtain your Will and so do you, should you need to make any amendments or update it.
